When I was in college back in the very early 1990’s, I took a class in earth sciences and there was a project to create an “Earth Day” portfolio, among other things.
It was my first real exposure to Earth Day, a day of recognition that began in 1970 (1969 if you want to be technical about it), signaling the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
I believe, on the whole, it is a noble effort to recognize that we need to take care of this global vessel that sustains us. Those of you who probably hate my views of global warming don’t even make the connection that I am a staunch believer in environmental conservation. I don’t litter, use organic products in my lawn and have 50% CFLs in my home’s lights.
I do what I can, where I can, when it is economically feasible to do so. The fact that I reside in probably one of the top 5 most expensive places to live in America kinda curtails my efforts to live in a totally ‘green’ home, which, sadly, would be cost-prohibitive.
Today I’ll just throw a few links at you, like the official site, apparently, of Earth Day, a government site, and another sponsored by the EPA.
Then there is this nauseating lefty nugget from the Concord Monitor out of New Hampshire. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
It occured to me that the people that drone on and on and blindly follow Al Gore are reminiscent of the images of those polygamist sect in Texas. The blank stares…the blind faith, the bad hair…the unibrow.
All joking aside, this day has become, unfortunately, yet another sounding board for the environ-”mentals” to spew their usual rhetoric, and less a celebration of the planet. You are considered a criminal and an offender of the great blue marble if you don’t adhere stringently to a pie in the sky idealistic view of life. Too bad.
In fact, I’ll leave you with a diatribe from Alan Caruba. Scroll down to the Earth Day portion and have a good laugh.
Happy Earth Day!!
